I recall sitting in my office on a summer afternoon with the thunder rolling outside and the grey cloud threatening another downpour, and I was reminded of how vulnerable we are, but also of how much we can influence our environment.

When I say the word ‘environment’ I am not only referring to our global or local space and place but also the environment we create around relationships. Both are linked and both are relevant to how we operate in our space.

Sometimes our influence is supporting and regenerative although unfortunately, it can often be destructive even if that is not our initial intention.

Outside I could hear the kookaburras laughing loudly almost in competition with, or in defiance of, the thunder. What do you focus on here – the wonderful laughter or the formidable sound of thunder? The happy sound or the potential threat?
How often do we put our focus on what we don’t want rather than what we do want?

We can be drawn to the negative rather than what is possible for us.

When we hear of more floods, with land and crops impacted, families, losing their homes and livelihoods, and many other impactful events – what do you think and feel? Sorry for those affected but possibly thankful that it’s not you. What is your role here?

All about perspective.

As the storm raged the power was cut, but fortunately I had backup. How often in life do we depend on backup of some sort? Other people or technology to help and support us? To get us back on track. To make things work again. To make us comfortable.

We could try taking responsibility for our thoughts, actions, and the outcomes of both and dare to let go of dependence and be accountable for creating positive change.

The kookaburras have stopped and the rain has come. Beautiful and necessary, but then again, I’m not in the middle of a flood.
It’s all about perspective.

There is a wonderful old story about a farmer and a donkey, which you may have heard. It was all about perspective for your personal statement. For each challenge, he encountered the farmer asked: “Is this a good thing or a bad thing? How can I make this work for me?”

When you are taking a stand with something you believe in or looking for a way to have a positive impact on your environment consider the ultimate outcome and why it’s important to you.

What’s your perspective on your role in life?
